Al-Shabaab controls parts of the impoverished country in the Horn of Africa, but has been pushed back from the capital in recent years. However, attacks on government facilities, hotels and restaurants in Mogadishu have increased again in recent months.

Most recently, 10 people were killed when a car bomb exploded in Mogadishu on August 21, while 11 people were killed in a terrorist attack on a restaurant in the capital in mid-August.

A few days earlier, the terrorists attacked a hotel on the beach, killing 20 people.
