The efforts of the Svarc sisters greatly boosted their team’s overall performance, with the Lions roaring to a 7.4 (46) to 3.5 (23) victory over the reigning premiers.
After a scoreless 10-minute opening to the match, it was Cathy who broke the deadlock with a free kick, putting the first points on the board.
As well as her goal, Cathy racked up an impressive 10 possessions and six tackles.
Not to be outdone, younger sister Ruby also gave a lion-hearted performance with nine possessions and 10 tackles, subsequently named as one of the best on field.
Sunday’s Grand Final match will be Cathy’s second flag attempt after playing in the 2021 side which secured the club’s first premiership.
She has since grown into one of the side’s most prolific midfielders, starring during season seven.
After being picked in the 2020 NAB AFLW Draft, Ruby worked hard over 12 months to make her AFLW debut during round three against Carlton in January this year.
Since then, the 29-year-old has built on her season six performance, providing plenty of explosive moments in season 7.
The versatile forward’s speed and agility has enabled clever goals week after week, the most recent in Round 9 against the Hawks.
After a disappointing loss to Melbourne in the season six preliminary final earlier this year, the sisters will attempt to lift the premiership trophy together this Sunday.
Ruby and Cathy grew up on their family farm outside of Corowa with their three other siblings, playing a range of sports locally. Both are well known for their stellar A Grade netball careers playing for Corowa-Rutherglen. They last played together in 2014 before Cathy moved to Geelong for her physiotherapy career and Ruby moved to Melbourne to study nutrition and dietetics. Cathy headed north in 2018 for her work career and played footy on the side for Wilston Grange. Shortly after, she caught the eye of selectors and was drafted by the Lions in 2019 with Ruby joining her 12 months later.
Brisbane and Melbourne will face off in the 2022 NAB AFLW Season Seven Grand Final this Sunday at Brighton Homes Arena (Springfield Central Stadium).
The sold-out match will start at 2.40pm AEDT on Sunday, November 27 and be broadcast on the Seven Network, Fox Footy and Kayo as well as live streamed on womens.afl and the AFLW Official app.
Sunday’s match will be the fourth time the Lions have qualified for a Grand Final in seven seasons.
