A slow start to the game cost Mulwala who were defeated by Numurkah by 27 points. The entire team arrived early so that they could have their team photos and seemed to leave their best-looking side in the rooms.
Numurkah came out firing and had 3 goals on the board by the time Mulwala looked like getting their hands on the ball.
Not until the 20-minute mark of the quarter when Jackson Gash used all of his brilliance to put Mulwala on the scoreboard and a late goal to Beau Seymour made the scoreboard palatable.
The second quarter was much the same as Numurkah seemed to have all the run and Mulwala were flat footed.
Dylan McNamara was again working harder than anyone in defense and if not for his staunch defensive skills and those of Harrison Meade, Mulwala would have been further behind than 3 goals at half time.
A brilliant third quarter set up by the electrifying skill of Jackson Gash and the incredible leap of Brodie Tyson in the ruck had Mulwala back in the game.
The forward line began functioning better and the delivery in from the likes of Gash, Griffiths and Zach Scott made life much easier as Mulwala kept Numurkah scoreless for the quarter whilst kicking four of their own to take a 9 point lead and control of the game into three quarter time.
The fourth quarter however was all Numurkah and Mulwala seemed to have run out of energy clawing back the original deficit and again allowed too much run and carry from the opposition.
Brodie Tyson, Jackson Gash, Dylan McNamara and Josh Eder continued to work hard and the backline who had been under immense pressure all day had the displeasure of watching the Numurkah midfield run forward and kick goals as Numurkah piled on 6 goals to 1 in the quarter to run away with the win.
Reserves
Mulwala 22.15.147 def Numurkah 1.2.8.
The 2004 premiership team looked on in amazement as the current crop of quality Reserves players showed they could be following in their footsteps.
Even more amazing was that one of their own was still out there following in his own footsteps from 20 years ago in Craig “Hornet” Frauenfelder.
Although his steps are much slower than they used to be, he showed he has lost none of his football nouse when he slotted a kick through the big sticks much to the delight of the crowd.
Not to be outdone, Austin Frauenfelder was playing his best game of the year in the ruck and casually went forward and kicked a brilliant goal himself.
The midfield unit of Tom Dow, Joseph Bland and Pixie McLachlan capitalized on Austin’s great work, having plenty of the ball and it was great to see the coach looking after a few more of the old timers and keeping them in the forward line as Dylan Robinson and Tim Cooper finished with multiple goals.
Goals: D. Robinson 5, J. Bland 3, T. Wilson 3, T. Cooper 3, L. Wood 2, A. Psaltiras 1, A. Frauenfelder 1, T. Dow 1, M. Adkins 1, C. Frauenfelder 1, M. McLachlan 1.
Best: A. Frauenfelder, T. Dow, J. Bland, D. Robinson, M. McLachlan, T. Cooper.
Thirds
Mulwala 19.17.131 def Numurkah 1.1.7.
After a few sketchy games where the young men had been troubled with illness and injury, the Under 17s got their season back on track with a dominating victory.
Having been named as the sub for his first Senior game later in the day, Jai Sneddon had his confidence up and was winning every contest that came along his path finishing with 3 goals in a dominant display.
On a day where the club was celebrating the 1994 Under 14s and 17s premiership reunion several of the players from that day’s sons were running around like superstars including famous surnames like Kreeck, Sanderson, O’Bryan, Sissons and Purtle and they were all proving that this generation will be much better than theirs.
The boys stamped their authority on the game early and although a very strong second half ensued; the errant goal kicking of the previous weeks crept back in to keep their goal scoring under 20 for the day.
Goals: M. O'Bryan 4, J. Sneddon 3, T. Sanderson 3, R. Cameron 2, V. Kreeck 2, H. Cooper 1, R. Bone 1, Z. Wheeler 1, B. Donovan 1, B. Johnson 1.
Best: J. Sneddon, R. Cameron, M O’Bryan, B. Johnson, B. Sissons, B. Donovan.
Fourths
Mulwala 17.16.118 def Numurkah 2.0.12.
Another scintillating display of team football has left Numurkah in the wake of the Mulwala Fourths onslaught that has been the 2024 season so far.
A blistering 7 goal first quarter on the back of “Junior Boar” Alex Richardson who was using his entire repertoire of skills in the forward line even showing up leading goal kicker Henry Donovan.
The slick ball movement of the team had the umpires struggling to keep up with general play as they transitioned the ball from the middle to the goal square faster than Axel Saunders’ 100 metre sprint.
Byron Dodd, Tyce Woodhead and Axel controlled the midfield throughout the game while Henry Donovan got busy in the second half to finish with 5 goals and 12 goal assists.
Both the Cooper brothers Logan and Harrison were frantic with their pressure in the forward line and finished with goals to their name along with a host of teammates as the 17 goals kicked was shared amongst most players.
Goals: H. Donovan 5, N. Leith 4, A. Saunders 2, L. Cooper 1, H. Cooper 1, J. Sage 1, H. Stephens 1, R. Phillips 1, A. Richardson 1.
Best: B. Dodd, H. Donovan, A. Saunders, T. Woodhead, L. Cooper, N. Leith.
