Seniors
Rutherglen 7:4:46 - Barnawartha 6:8:44
Round 17 saw Rutherglen host Barnawartha on a heavy deck at Barkly Park in front of a large vocal past player’s crowd.
Both teams started well in a strong physical contest kicking two goals apiece, but Rutherglen counting the cost of the bruising start losing both Ben Pleming and Jayden McCluskey to injury in the first quarter.
The second quarter was much the same as the first with not much separating the teams with Barny going into the main break with a 2-point lead.
The arm wrestle continued in the second half, with Rutherglen able to take the lead in the last quarter to hold on by an exciting 2-point victory.
Awards: Complete Body Craft - Peter Bell, Corowa Sports Power - Michael Cooper, Bridge Rd Brewery - Ryan Jones.
Reserves
Rutherglen 4:2:26 - Barnawartha 7:11:53
On a heavy ground against a much more experienced line up the boys played a Super Game.
The Cats went into the clash without a few key players, but every player had some influence on the game at one time or another.
There was a few changes to the Cat’s game plan to allow a more free flowing style. Even though the ground was heavy Rutherglen had some super passages of play.
Going into the half time break with a slender lead was a great effort by the boys and at three quarter time the game was still in the balance.
To Barny’s credit they lifted it up a notch with their experience showing out in the end.
It was also great to have someone like Josh Quick put his hand up to play for the day.
Awards: Winslow Construction - Josh Quick, Bridge Rd Brewery - Jake Goddard, Sports Power - Hayden Weller.
Next week the Cat’s travel to Yack to take on the top of the table side.
With the same effort put in over the last few weeks, the Cats are sure to ruffle a few feathers.
Under 17s
Rutherglen 3:3:21 - Barnawartha 7:10:52
The 17s had a tough task awaiting them facing the top of the table team in Barnawartha.
Unfortunately, due to a number of reasons, Rutherglen were down to 16 before the game had even started but to the boy’s credit the mood before the game was very high and it showed for the whole game.
The boys went down by 20 points but not without grit and determination and a willingness to play a four-quarter game which was the most pleasing aspect.
Awards: Silver Key Café – Archer Colvin, Rutherglen Pizza – Riley Hayes, Caffeine Machine – Declan Thompson.
With one game left, the guys want to go out with a bang and finish of a difficult year strongly.
Under 14s
Rutherglen 5:6:36 - Barnawartha 5:2:32
Two games on a heavy ground had taken a toll on the young lads forcing the game into scrap between two sides that had been fighting all year for the fifth spot in the finals race.
The lead constantly changed throughout the game however a ten-point lead at three quarter time proved enough of a gap for the young Cats to take a two-point victory.
Was great to see some of the younger ages make an impact throughout the game with Harry Chandler, Logan Poole and Tommy Kaf showing sure hands in a tight contest while Jack Torney continued to hit the score board.
Awards: Parker Pies – Laiton Hetherington, Parker Pies – Bodhi McCartney, Caffeine Machine – Tommy Kaferela, Flashes Five – Ryan Barkley.

The young Cats faced a very tall and experience opposition on Saturday. However, the girls put up a brave effort against a strong attacking side. Faith put in 100% at both ends of the court with Holly solid in defence. Again, the Cats little mid court did themselves proud and managed to produce some beautiful intercepts assisted by our experience defence in Kaity, Abby and Jacinta. Girls kept their heads up and played the game out till the last minute. Well done champions.
