Results in Section 1 went according to plan with Corowa Red defeating Chiltern while Wang Hardcourt eased past Wang Lawn. Corowa Red were never troubled against Chiltern and following that performance have been installed as short priced favourites to win the premiership. Red’s Greg Filliponi had a day out and would be totally content with his day’s efforts, he didn’t lose a game for the match.
Corowa Red’s men were impressive and this is where their strength lays and where they will lay the foundation for their team’s assault on the premiership. Having a powerful men’s combination (as Red do) is the key to success as most matches are decided by the mixed sets and if you have dominant men then the advantage is with that team.
Chiltern can be proud of their season’s efforts and if the addition of a couple of players will assist with them competing against the likes of Corowa Red. On Saturday Chiltern had none better than Sam Bennett while Deb McKinnar, Brodie McKinnar and Jarrod McKinnar added cameos. Apart from Greg Filliponi Corowa’s even performance across the board was outstanding and the reason why they are flag favourites.
The Hardcourt–Lawn battle went to the wire with the lead changing all day and with the mixed sets to play the match was evenly poised with the scores level. It was the overall strength and consistency of Hardcourt that gave them the edge and ultimately the win. Wendy Hogan was the shining light in the Lawn team winning all her three sets while Shaun Ablazej and Janelle Hartwig chipping in with two each to take the match to the wire. Hardcourt had none better than Andy Lucas with three sets and a host of two-set performers which underlines the evenness of the Hardcourt team.
Section 2
Everton continue to build towards the finals with another solid performance against Boorhaman although not at the standard required to win premierships it was a workman like effort that got the spoils.
Everton managed to take an early lead courtesy of their men and by the mixed sets held a 5-3 set lead and a handful of games to the good. It was left to the experience of the Everton team to show the way and put the sword to the heart of the Boorhaman team while the younger brigade fought tooth and nail to ensure Boorahaman didn’t get a sniff of victory. Boorhaman were keen to show the Section 2 teams that they aren’t pushovers and with their showing on Saturday they are capable of causing an upset next as the finals begin.
Best for Everton were Noel and Ruth Kneebone and Dook Gibb – all with three sets while Shirley Fuller, Kirsty Tyers, Hayley Thomson, Zave Talbot and Ian Maiden made things difficult for Everton.
Wang Hardcourt were in the box seat to cause an upset against the raging flag favourites Myrrhee on Saturday when they dominant the women’s sets to set up a 6-2 set lead before the mixed sets started.
Hopes and confidence were high in the Hardcourt camp as they ventured out for the mixed sets but this was soon extinguished as they lost the first three sets 8-0, 8-1 and 8-1.
As good teams do they find a way and the resolve to produce their best when it is required and that’s exactly what Myrrhee did which is the sign of a good team. Myrrhee had Dylan Van Berlo lead the way while Peter Allen, Dan Griffin and Melissa Pinn ensured they were still close enough to pull off an unexpected victory. Hardcourt fought valiantly and Ray Munari, Curtis Hines, Nicole Brimblecombe and Kath Trainer were outstanding in defeat.
Section 3
Wahgunyah United (Glen Bobbin, Fiona Rose, Rob Hill and Matt Davies) were too good for Rutherglen Blue (Mark Stones, Sarah White, Henry Smits and James White) and cemented 3rd place on the ladder.
With two sets to go, the result hung in the balance and the score line level, Wahgunyah took a slender one-game advantage after winning the next set 8-7 while Fiona Rose and Matt Davies put the finishing touches on the result with an 8-3 win.
Wahgunyah Red (Shaun Moore, Gordon Sawyer, Peter Trebely and Tye Callow) confirmed their standing as the top team with a convincing win against Corowa (Hayden Davies, Aaron Spencer, Ryan Gofton and Tom Forrest). Wahgunyah Red now have the opportunity to advance to the grand final with a win next week which on paper appears likely.
Wahgunyah Blue (Travis Lewis-McDonald, Jesse Johnstone, Mareeta Corcoran and Sonia Johnstone) have jumped from 4th place to 2nd with a comprehensive win against rivals Wahgunyah South (Brad Schmidt, Jake Saville, Priscilla Hill and Corey Hill) and have the momentum heading into the finals to be a threat and have a big impact in the finals.
South needs to regroup this week and have faith in their ability that they can turn things around. Wooragee (Lucy O’Connor, Liam Ladbrook, Annika Knoth and Lisa O’Connor) have finished the season on a high defeating Rutherglen Red (Bayley Whyte, Sue Cofield, Rebecca Cooper and Emily Keys). Both Wooragee and Rutherglen have the off-season to recruit and practice to return next year full of enthusiasm.
