The Corowa Rowing Club have returned from the Victorian Rowing Championships in an impressive 13th place claiming two gold, three silver and two bronze medals.

Day one of the Victorian Championships at Nagambie featured racing over the 2000- metre course.
Fine conditions greeted the competitors with the club’s first race the single scull with Brad Pearsall and Lachie Seymour competing. With eight entries the event was a first and final.
Both scullers got out well with little separating the field at the halfway mark, as the pace picked up both of the Corowa scullers were well placed.
Keeping to the race plan Brad finished strongly to claim fourth place with Lachie finishing strongly in sixth place.
The single sculls combined for the club double scull. Lining up again against eight crews in the final the Corowa crew had a fantastic race keeping up with the early leaders and in the tight battle down the course finishing strongly to finish in fifth place.
The females were up next with Anastasia McFarlane and Sommers and the crew featuring Eva Broad and Imogen Wragge competing in the U21 double scull.
The wind picked up making conditions tougher for the first 1000m.
Anastasia and Sommers steadied coming past the crowd to finish in fourth place while Eva and Imogen finished eighth. Both crews needed the tough hit out for the day’s final race, the school girls quad.
The final race over the 2000m course was the Div 1 School Girls quad, with The Scots School students Anastasia, Sommers and Phoebe Packer joined by St Paul’s student Imogen Wragge and cox Immie Tomlinson from St Francis.
Up against the eight best schools in the state the event was a real test for the Corowa crew.
The race was a real battle as the two favourites moved clear the Corowa crew was in a battle with Ruyton for the bronze medal.
Little separated the crews at the 1000m mark with Ruyton crew holding a half boat length lead.
The Corowa made their opposition work all the way in a final sprint to the line to fall short by just two seconds, finishing in fourth place.
The crew gave their all as they prepared for the 1000m grade events on Sunday.
Day two began with the heats of the Male B grade quad scull. The crew featured Liam Fitzgerald, Brad, Lachie, Simon McFarlane and cox Harvey McFarlane.
The crew had to finish in the top three to progress through to the final. They followed their race plan to lead all the way withstanding a strong challenge from the Essendon crew as they progressed through to the final.
The final played out as expected with a great battle between Essendon and Corowa with Corowa holding on to claim a gold medal.
Racing then moved onto C grade double sculls with the top four moving on to the finals.
Indi Hogan and Charlotte Packer were keen to continue to their racing over the 1000m course. They held great form to finish in second place in their heat.
Imogen and Phoebe were also able to row well into second place in their heat to propel them into the final.
That final proved an exciting race with little separating the top crews in the battle for medals. In the end the final sprint saw Imogen and Phoebe claim the bronze media with Indi and Charlotte closing fast in fifth position.
It was a tight turnaround for the C grade quads with Indi and Charlotte teaming with Caitlin Nixon and Imogen Tomlinson and cox Edie Tomlinson to contest their heat. They rowed a smart race to ensure they made the final.
The second Corowa C grade crew of Liz Sandow, Susie Scott, Grietje and Eily Taylor was a new combination racing for the first time and showed great determination to also progress through to the final.
With Corowa featuring two crews into the final, the experienced crew lead by Liz pushed their way into medal contention by halfway, and with a strong finish moved into second place to claim the silver medal with Imogen T’s crew finishing fifth.
Preparing for the Masters’ regattas Julie Underwood and Alex Conway competed in the Female B grade single scull events. With three heats a top two placing in the heats was required to progress through to the final.
Julie was in the first heat, rowing a great race and a fast time for the conditions. She just missed out making the final finishing in fourth place.
Alex was in the third heat as she worked hard from the start to maintain a slight lead at the 500m mark. Using her racing experience, she held onto her lead to claim the win.
The tough cross wind conditions greeted the crews for the final with Alex worked hard to finish strongly in fourth place.
The youngest members Marcus Davies and Harvey lined up in the Under15 single scull event against a sculler from Geelong. The Geelong sculler took the early lead as Marcus worked hard to sit in second place while 11year old Harvey was in third place.
Marcus was closing the gap as the two leaders fought out a real battle with Marcus claiming the Silver medal with Harvey in third place.
Marcus and Harvey teamed up in the U15 double scull against the young crew from Hawthorn.
The Corowa crew gained great confidence in their single events earlier as they took the early lead and rowed strongly in the windy conditions to win the gold medal.
The Open mixed quad combination featured Brad, Simon, Alex, Anastasia and cox Harvey, lined up in the eight crew and was well placed by the 500m mark.
As the race picked up for the final sprint the Corowa crew fell just short of a medal to finish in fourth place.
The club had two crews entered in the Female B grade quad scull with two heats a top four finish was required to progress through to the final.
The first heat crew were Julie, Susie, Grietje, Liz and cox Edie Tomlinson. Racing well in the conditions, the crew worked hard to claim the all important fourth position.
The young Corowa crew of Sommers, Phoebe, Eva, Imogen and cox Hunter Mills joined their club mates into the final by also finishing in fourth place.
With the heat winners in the favoured lanes 1 and 2 the Corowa crews were in lanes 7 and 8.
The young crew had a seat change putting Eva into the stoke seat as both crews battled hard into the cross winds with the young crew improving their position to finish in sixth place and the Julie l stroked crew in eighth position.
The club’s double sculls were on show next, with Liam and Lachie leading the way in the B grade event. With three heats a top two placing was required to move through to the final.
In a tight battle down the course and recording a fast time, the crew finished in third place.
The new mixed combination of Liam and Anastasia teamed up for the first time. In a real battle down the course against quality opposition the crew finished in fifth place.
The female B grade double was well entered with three heats a top two finish was required to progress.
The first heat featured Eva and Alex, and in a another strong showing the crew raced well to the line finishing for fourth place.
The school girl combination of Sommers and Phoebe lined up in the second heat finishing in third place.
The Male A grade crew saw Brad and Simon team up. Rowing strongly together the Corowa crew came up against quality opposition to finish in fourth place and just miss out on making the final.
Quick turnarounds for Sommers in the A grade single scull saw her in and out of boats between her heat and final. Needing a top four finish in the heat Sommers rowed a controlled race to finish in third place.
The final featured a strong field with Sommers improving on her heat time to show great determination to finish in fifth place.
The final event for the club was the Female C grade single scull. The club had four entries with Imogen Tomlinson, Imogen Wragge, Caitlin Nixon and Eily Taylor, with two heats a top four finish was required to move into the final.
The first heat of eight scullers featured Caitlin and Imogen Tomlinson lining up together. For Caitlin it was her first race in a single scull. Imogen showed her great experience in the single to row a well-controlled race to claim the heat win while Caitlin gained great confidence rowing strongly and finishing in sixth place.
The second heat saw Imogen and Eily line up against each other to qualify for the final. Imogen rowed a well-timed race to finish in second place as Eily worked hard to move clear into the all-important third position.
With three Corowa scullers lining up in the eight-crew final, a great race was on show. Imogen T moved out fast as she took on the Carrum sculler and Imogen W made her move at the 500m to push into medal contention.
With little separating the top five placings Imogen W claimed the silver, Imogen T the bronze medal while the fast-improving Eily finished in fifth place. All three scullers improved on their heat time.
The focus now turns to the Head of the School girl’s regatta in Geelong, with the club’s school girl scullers competing for their schools.
The Scots School students Sommers and Anastasia Open double, Phoebe Open single, Indigo and Charlotte year 10 double, St Paul’s Walla Imogen Wragge Open single and St Francis Imogen Tomlinson Open single. Eily Taylor will present the Rutherglen High School Year 10 single.
As the rowing season comes to an end, the club welcomes new members to join them for their autumn/ winter program in preparation for next season.
