In the weekend competition, Kyabram’s division five side overcame a supremely confident Yea at Shepparton Park, 60-57, in a tight match at the finish.
The division seven side unfortunately ran into a very upbeat Rushworth outfit and lost 27-41.
This concluded a very successful pennant season for the club with a division five flag, division seven’s runner-up and a third-placed division one from four teams entered in the Goulburn Valley weekend pennant.
Don Cook’s team was the outstanding rink for the day in division five.
Kayla Jackson at lead was very good.
She was well backed up by Murray Tenace at second with Geoff Coad playing a number of telling shots that kept the game on Kyabram’s terms.
Cook was the glue to the team with his fine bowling and leadership.
From 12-9 on the 13th end they ground to 21-11 on the 20th end.
Terry McInness played a great shot on the last end to change three down to three up to give Yea a chance of snatching the game.
Cook’s final score was 21-14.
Helen Chapman’s team was well served by its skipper, especially over the last nine ends of the game.
From 13 all on the 13th end she played many telling bowls to convert and cut back numbers to keep the score to 17-25.
Ray Harrison and his team were having some trouble with Yea’s Maurie Finn at 9-13 on the 13th end.
From there they all lifted to take their score to 22-16 on the 20th end.
They clung on to win 22-18 and seal the grand final.
All players in all teams gave their best efforts during the game.
The game was thrilling and kept the large crowd on its toes to the last bowl.
Division seven had the end to a great season that all good teams dread.
Ted Hazelman’s team of Ian George, Dossie Grills and Jan MacFadyen plugged away all day and came up winners 19-18 in a fine team effort.
Murray Boswood’s team ran into Tim Luttick’s team in great form.
They were unable to hold them all day and went down 8-23.
Losing the grand final was a blow to all players, though they should remember the magnificent season that got them into the grand final.
Midweek
All Kyabram division five players in the midweek grand final played at Shepparton Golf had a wonderful day on the green.
All rinks won in spectacular fashion.
The final score was Kyabram 82 shots to Tatura-Hill Top 25 shots.
Murray Boswood’s team of Keith Hindson, John MacFadyen and John Elliot won 32 shots to 8.
Murray and his team started strongly and led 16-1 after 10 ends.
Great leading from Keith Hindson put pressure on his opponent from the beginning of the match.
John Mac just kept putting bowls in the head and John Elliot was able to outdraw his opponent when his team was down.
Skipper Murray had a comfortable day as most of the work was already done for him.
Geoff Coad’s team of Wendy Mitchell and Nathan Jackson (both these players are in their first season of pennant) and Dawn Preddy won 25-7.
With the score tied at three shots all on the fifth end this looked like it was going to be a close game.
Winning the next five ends and leading 13 shots to 3 after 10 ends put a different look on the game. Losing the next end did not deter Geoff and his team.
They simply put their heads down and won the next six ends to lead 23-5 after 17 ends.
Tatura-Hill Top won two of the next three ends, but could not get any closer on the score card.
Geoff Hocking’s team of Garry Salomons, Brian Lindsay and Murray Tenace (in his first season of pennant), won 25 shots to 10.
Tatura-Hill Top led this game until the eighth end when the score was tied five shots all.
Geoff and his team took the lead only to have their opponents catch them again on the 12th end with the score tied again at nine shots all.
After this Geoff and his team took control of the match-winning six of the next seven ends to lead 25 shots to 10 on the 19th end and go on to win.
