The levee behind the 21st hole on Corowa Golf Club’s Old Course has broken leaving the club no choice but to restrict golfing to nine holes – on the East Course until further notice which can be double dup for 18 holes.

Golfers were out on Monday enjoying the golf holes what they can play on the championship course and are encouraged to keep playing by club CEO Daniel Peacock.
“Before this latest deluge of rain we had great patronage on our course,” he told The Free Press. “We want people to come out and enjoy what we have available and that also includes good quality food at affordable prices, the cinema with movies for all ages of people and for people to come out and have a drink with friends to give them support.”
It was Monday of last week, November 14 when the water caused havoc at Corowa Golf Club. “At about 4.00pm it started with the levee trickling over,” Mr Peacock said. “It was a one-foot break which went to 3.5 metres.
“The river rose to 8.11m. When it was 7.9m the levee broke. We could see some damage coming, with paths and bunkers caving in. The Old Course will be out of action for a period of time.”
It is particularly disappointing news for the club and a shattered CEO. Despite the bad news, it’s a positive looking Mr Peacock. “Everywhere you looked at our course, it was in great condition,” he said.
“But the club is still very much operational. We’re taking bookings for Christmas and events. The community support to the club during normal trading and we’ve had offers of assistance from every club along the river, including our RSL Club.

“The club has enjoyed a profitable year – after depreciation – and the best in two decades.
“This latest news is heartbreaking. We’ll be OK but the biggest thing is hanging on to staff. It was the staff who pulled the club through Covid.”
The club’s AGM is on Monday, December 12 where the ramifications of this unfortunate water situation will be advised, but also exciting initiatives by the club will be advised to members.
