Although the day ended in disappointment with a 20-0 defeat to the formidable Wangaratta Knights, the team’s journey to the final will be remembered as a milestone for women’s football in Corowa.
The game was intense from the start, with the Wangaratta Knights quickly setting the pace.
Tries were scored by Tiana Stuart in the 6th minute, Destiny Dodd in the 19th minute, Sally Kaiwai in the 21st minute, and Constance Dodd in the 23rd minute.
The Knights also successfully converted two of their attempts, leaving the Cougars with a steep uphill battle by halftime, trailing 12-0.
Despite the scoreline, the Cougars put up a fierce fight. Leading the charge was Captain Eboni Clifton, who marked her 50th game for the club.
Since joining the Corowa Cougars in 2019, Eboni has become an integral part of the team, renowned for her defensive skills.
Her sliding and diving tags have earned her numerous accolades, including Best Defender in 2019, Most Consistent in 2021 and 2023, Players’ Player, and the prestigious Jean Sharp Memorial Medal for Best Woman in Finals.
This year, as captain, she has once again demonstrated why she is a key player, consistently giving 110 per cent both on and off the field. Her leadership was crucial in guiding the team to their first grand final.
On the field, coach Tash Battye displayed her brilliance, expertly directing plays and keeping the team focused.
Speedy fullback Bridgette Lee and defender Sophie Lee were relentless in their efforts, while Skye Rodgers and Ella Webb made their presence felt with strong performances.
Ella Webb, in particular, has had an outstanding first year in the game, signalling that she is a player to watch in the future.
After the final whistle, emotions were running high on both sides.
Despite the disappointment of the loss, the Corowa girls held their heads high, embracing each other and reflecting on their incredible journey to the grand finale.
There were tears, but they were mixed with pride and gratitude for the opportunity to make history together. The Cougars congratulated the Wangaratta Knights on their well-deserved victory, sharing in the joy of their opponents’ success.
Club President Matt Williams shared his pride in the team following the game.
“We are beyond proud of what you girls have achieved as a team this season,” he said.
“The Cougars family is so proud of what you have achieved on the field, especially in reaching the grand final for the first time. Thank you to every player. We couldn’t be prouder.”
Captain Eboni Clifton, reflecting on the game, also praised her team’s effort.
“What a game! I couldn’t be prouder of the efforts you all put in today,” she said.
“We didn’t come away with the win, but we came away as a team who made history for our club.
“The never-give-up attitude and continuous effort got us to the grand final today, and that’s something we will treasure. Well done on a fantastic year, ladies.”
Though the final score may not have gone their way, the Corowa Cougars Ladies Tag team’s determination, teamwork, and achievement in reaching the grand final will undoubtedly inspire future generations of players having set a new benchmark for the club.
