The Federation Room was transformed into a red carpet affair as both the men’s and women’s teams, along with enthusiastic club supporters, dressed to impress.
The evening was expertly hosted by Chelsea Stubbs, who ensured that the event was filled with excitement and memorable moments. DJ Rick provided the entertainment, keeping the spirits high throughout the night.
A heartfelt speech by Club President Mathew Williams kicked off the evening. He began by expressing his immense pride in the club’s achievements during the 2023 season and praised the sense of community and family that has been cultivated within the club over the past few years.
“We feel as though our club has had a very successful season, and we have had a lot of community support behind us this year,” he said.
“Both of our teams making finals and our men making it to the big dance and playing in the Grand Final, Ladbrokes Australia doing an episode on our club, gaining hundreds of followers on our socials, we managed to turn lots of heads and paint our town black and white.
“Our players have been sensational, and we have built really strong friendships along the way and I think that is up there with the best part of it all.”
The men’s and women’s team coaches, Daniel Webb, Brenden Johnson (assistant) and Tash Battye, also took the stage to express their gratitude. They thanked the committee for the year and acknowledged the support of sponsors and supporters throughout the year.
Battye remarked, “It’s the people that make a club, and I think the Cougars nailed it this year.”
One of the most poignant moments of the evening came with the announcement of the Jean Sharp Memorial Medal. This award, in memory of Jean Sharp, a beloved life member of the club, holds great significance for all involved. Jean Sharp was remembered as the heart and soul of the Cougars, dedicating her life to the club as a strapper and trainer.
In a touching tribute, the inaugural Jean Sharp Memorial Medal was awarded to Shanae Murphy and Eboni Clifton for their outstanding performances in the Women’s finals. Their achievement honoured the legacy of Jean Sharp and underscored the club’s commitment to preserving its history.
The Club Person of the Year was also awarded to two recipients being Shanae Murphy and Colin Fleming.
