The Free Press spoke with Cougars President Steve Briggs who said the club was thrilled to welcome Daniel Webb as the men’s coach and Tash Battye as the women’s coach.
With nine grand finals up his sleeve, three best and fairest awards, and a previous coaching stint, Daniel brings wealth of player knowledge to the men’s side.
Daniel said he was looking forward to coaching again with the assistance Brenden Johnson, a former Cougars player.
“We are looking forward to next year. The ultimate goal is a flag, and that starts by continuing to create a great environment within the club,” Daniel said.
“Our aim is to grow as a team and build on our great culture. The Cougars are a big family club, and we are pretty proud of that.”
Brenden, who has been a regular face at the club for over five years, said he was pleased to return to the club as assistant coach.
“There’s a renewed focus. Next year is shaping up to be a good year,” he said.
Sports enthusiast Tash was excited to put her hand up and coach the women’s side. The 28-year-old told the Free Press she has “played every sport under the sun” having most recently played touch footy, volleyball and netball.
“For the women, our focus will be up the camaraderie, working on fitness and really building a competitive side,” she said.
“We are also encouraging women to come down and give the sport a go. Preseason is a great opportunity to ease into the sport and learn the basics together.”
Tash will be supported by Shanae Murphy as assistant coach.
With previous playing experience and a strong family connection with the club Shanae said she was looking forward to assisting Tash.
“What’s great about our club is that it’s not all about the sport. We encourage anyone of any skill level to come down and join in. It’s all about building friendships and have fun,” she said.
“The other great thing is that we are a unified club. The men and women sides are equal. Everyone is treated the same.”
Club president Steve said the club was looking forward to the 2023 season.
“We are hoping to attract some new players, so anyone who’s interested is more than welcome to try out,” he said.
“It doesn’t matter how much experience you have, come down and give it a go. You might find you really enjoy it.
“We would love to see some fresh faces part of Cougar family. We are a diverse club, and we welcome people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.”
The Cougars preseason kicks off on February 2, with a big barbeque and meet and greet at the Cougars Rugby League ground, adjacent to the Corowa airport.
