Corowa RSL Bowls Club’s three teams had mixed results on Tuesday, December 6.
The A2 side played Moira at home and had a12 shot win, 60 to 48. Raz Porter won 22-17, Bryan Gee won 21-12 and Allen Bartlett went down 17-19. The A2 side is on top of the ladder, having won every game.
The B1 side travelled to Yarrawonga and had a mixed day on the carpet, going down by 15 shots, 50-65. Alan Holmquest got off to a slow start but came back strongly to lose 15-22, Dave Lewis had a one-sided game and won 28-6. Gary Brown came up against a strong skip and couldn’t keep a shot in the head, going down 7-37. The B1 side is second on the ladder.
The B2 side played against the new team in the competition, Howlong, who proved that they are much too strong for this grade. Peter Mills lost 18-32, Les Pilfoot lost 16-26 and Sam Nixon lost 11-18. The B2 side is 3rd on the ladder.
Weekend Pennant
Only 2 sides played on Saturday 10th with the B2’s having a bye. They are 4th on the ladder.
The A2 side played Corowa Civic at home and had a narrow loss overall, going down by 3 shots. Jim Walker won 26-14, Troy Brockley won 31-12, Joshua Thornton lost 18-20 and Raz Porter had a day to forget, going down 7-39. This side is 6th on the ladder.
The A4 side travelled to Yarrawonga, the second time in a week for most of the side, and the result was no better. Norm Carmody lost 11-26, David Lewis lost 12-31, Alan Holmquest lost 18-29 and Susie Swift lost 23-32. This side is 6th on the ladder.
Coaching Clinic
This was conducted on Sunday, December 11 by Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Joshua Thornton. Josh also played pennant for RSL under a “promotional pennant permit” on the Saturday. The clinic was attended by several junior bowlers and some of our new members, who were fortunate to benefit from his vast experience.
Josh also donated a set of bowls to Corowa Civic Bowls Club to assist in fundraising for their flood clean- up efforts.
Barefoot Bowls
A group of 6 bowlers braved the windy weather to have a game on Thursday evening. Barefoot bowls will continue over the coming weeks, bookings are not required.
Singles Championship
Peter Summerill defeated Tony Coughlin 25 to 20 and Rod Garthwaite defeated Allen Bartlett 25-16. The finals of the Club Singles will be played on Wednesday 14th at 3.30pm. Peter Summerill plays Rod Garthwaite and Maree Jones plays Judy Black. All four players are bowling for their first singles title. Come along and see some entertaining bowls.
Christmas Party
Forty members enjoyed good food and a relaxed atmosphere at their Christmas celebrations in the RSL bistro on Sunday, December 11.
Christmas Social Bowls
This will be held on Wednesday, December 21 at 10am. All members, both new and old are encouraged to come along and join in the festivities, Christmas attire is optional. Names in by 9am on the day please.
