This week Rutherglen made the trip to Eskdale for what was a cold start to the morning but turned out to be a cracking day for footy.
It was great to see so many Rutherglen supporters make the trip up to support the juniors and stay for the day to cheer on the senior grades.
The first quarter saw Mitta United get the jump on Rutherglen and kick the first few goals of the game which could have been more if it weren’t for the strong defence led by Mitch Cofield and Braeden Hatton.
In the second quarter the Cats were able to reset and gain some ascendancy through the midfield getting some vital clearances in a high stoppage game, with Reed Bonat and Matt Tanner thrusting the Cats forward and getting the ball deep inside to the key forwards Jake Meyer and Jyda House.
Jyda House played one of his best games of the year finishing with four goals for the game and applying plenty of pressure.
The third quarter was an arm wrestle with both sides finding it difficult to score due to the tackling pressure, with Tory Oats and Tommy Allison bringing the heat.
Final quarter had Thomas Kilpatrick and Jamie Seymour go onto the ball helping the Cats grind out a gutsy win away with their ferociousness and attack on the ball.
This was a massive win for the Cats which they can build into the second half of the year and carry the momentum through to next week when we take on Wahgunyah at home.
Award Winners: Poachers Paradise Hotel – Matt Tanner, Complete Body Craft – Jyda House, Club Corowa – Tyler Ferraro, Rutherglen Pizza – Mitchell Cofield, Boorhaman Hotel – Braeden Hatton.
Reserves
A beautiful day up at Eskdale as Rutherglen took on Mitta. Ryan Maxwell started strong in defence intercepting and spoiling the ball coming his way, Matt Halton bursting out of the stoppages hitting up Ryan Jones for a goal.
James Plummer had the ball on a string sparking the cats in the midfield. Mitta took a two-goal lead at halftime. Jac Holmes batted in the ruck all day either winning the tap or evening the contest, but it was Mitta who won the day kicking away in the last quarter after the cats had run out of legs.

A cold, frosty and foggy morning greeted us as we arrived at the Eskdale ground. With numbers bolstered by extra players due to injuries and absences the boys still managed a great win. Led well by captains Fred and Archer in a scrappy game that saw tough physical contests from both sides.
The boys were able to get on top of the game except for a lull in the third quarter when Mitta managed a couple of quick goals. Aidan Berriman made a cameo in the forward line contributing with three goals to support Logan Poole’s four goal haul with the Maestro (Harry Chandler) popping up again with three goals.
Rory Beattie and Mitch Francis also added to the team’s goals. Thanks to the bigger body and experience of Declan Thompson with a couple of goals and supporting our midfielders, enabling us to keep the ball moving forward.
Credit too to Liam Bulmer who really stepped up this week to hold the backline together.

Extremely tough conditions greeted the Under 14 Cats at Eskdale.
The weather was cold and icy, and tested the resilience of the young players. Rutherglen lined up against an undermanned Mitta which gave opportunities to many players to try out new positions, play for the opposition and to build confidence going forward in the season.
The Cats got off to a strong start, with the midfield showing dominance. In the second quarter usual backman Jayke O’Malley straightened up and scored his first goal of the season.
By half time the lead was 46 points. Rutherglen continued to press on in the third quarter, and Kane McSweeney also opened his goal account for the season.
By the final siren Rutherglen had managed to hold Mitta to a solitary goal. Aiden Sibraa had a day out with a bag of six goals.
Despite an inaccurate conversion rate, it was still an excellent win, solidifying the teams third position on the ladder.
