After 230 senior games with Corowa Rutherglen in the Ovens and Murray league, which included being captain and a best and fairest winner, it will be a return home to Barkly Park for the 36-year-old Seymour.
Rutherglen is very excited about the dual appointment of coaches, and finally snaring Seymour. Seymour’s appointment was announced to players last Thursday evening and was very well received.
“I am absolutely stoked to have Scooter – we’ve been working to get him throughout the year,” President Pat Beattie told The Free Press.
“It’s been 13 years since Scooter last played for the Cats. He has plenty of experience playing Ovens and Murray and is a champion on and off the field who will be an asset to our club moving forward.”
The president said the club has signed up 95% of this year’s playing list for season 2024. “We have a young group and Scooter is exactly the right fit for our group,” the 54-year-old Oaklands and Coreen league star, who played several games in Rutherglen’s Reserves this season, said. (“I didn’t go into the packs though!)
“In fact some of our youngsters, including Tommy Alison and Judd Kuschert, were keen to get him. Scooter can further develop our kids – he has that leadership experience and assisted with the Roos Under 17s.
“It will be a good blend with Moo as non-playing coach and Scooter the on-field coach”.
Seymour described his appointment as “pretty exciting”. “We’ll be coming from a fair way back (ladder-wise) but it’s going to be an exciting time going forward,” the construction supervisor at Rivalea said.
“I’ve known Duane for a lot of years and looking forward to coaching with him. We’ve actually played together in years gone by (junior football at Rutherglen).”
The on-field coach for 2024 and versatile player is still playing good footy. This year Seymour played down Bairnsdale way with Lucknow in the East Gippsland Football League, coached by former Corowa coach Shaun (Moose) Mooney. Lucknow finished fifth, just missing the finals.
Jamie Seymour entertained Roos’ fans and dazzled opposition players in the Ovens and Murray for over a decade.
The former captain led by example and put his heart and soul into the Blue and White jumper every week. He’ll do the same for the Cats and his teammates in the Tallangatta and District league in 2024.
