Yarrawonga Pigeons were the first, locking in mercurial forward Leigh Williams as senior coach on the eve of their finals series following the news regarding 2023 premiership coach Steve Johnson flying the coop after the completion of the 2024 season.
Williams joined the Pigeons in 2022, leaving his mark on the competition in his first year, taking out the Ovens and Murray Football League’s lead goalkicking award, the Doug Strang medal with 67 goals in just 11 matches, and finishing runner-up to Pigeons’ captain Leigh Masters in the league best and fairest, the Morris Medal.
He arrived at JC Lowe Oval after carving his name into the record books of the Eastern Football League with home club Norwood, booting 583 goals over a 10-year period, was a four-time winner of the EFL goalkicking award and played in a premiership at Norwood in 2014.
Williams was drafted by the Melbourne Football Club in 2011 and has also spent time with Williamstown, where he was an assistant coach.
The Mulwala Lions were also quick to lock in their coaches for 2025 appointing co-coaches Matthew Gorman and Kade Rowe soon after the Murray League finals series.
Rowe played his junior football at Mulwala and made his senior debut, on the wing, at just 16-years-of-age, straight from the thirds and moved into the midfield before heading to Tungamah at age 19, playing in two premierships.
His coaching career has included four years at Tocumwal and one at Mulwala.
The Lions attracted former Pigeons captain Matt Gorman back to the local area in 2022 after having a successful stint with Mooroopna in the Goulburn Valley League.
The Tungamah Bears have confirmed the appointment of Sam Ferguson and Sean Johns who committed last year as senior football co-coaches for 2024-2025 season.
Ferguson played at the Shepparton Swans, captained Congupna for four years winning a best and fairest and has represented the MFL on six occasions. He also had a stint with the North London Lions while he was overseas winning their best and fairest.
Sean Johns is a familiar name in the area, previously playing with Mulwala for six seasons before taking on an imperative role with the Bears. Johns has captained the Murray Bushrangers and represented NSW/ACT in the under 18 championships. He has also played at the Wangaratta Magpies, and Strathfieldsaye helping them to their first premiership.
As for the Hoppers, Rennie Football Netball Club announced last week that club stalwart Jarryd Fountain was re-appointed as senior football coach for the 2025 season.
The 31-year-old dual premiership captain and a senior best and fairest player will again aim for player retention and recruitment.
