Since then, students and parents have taken the initiative to raise funds for much-needed repairs.
One of its students, Cody Parker, 7, has taken on the challenge of raising funds again this year, after being the school’s top fundraiser in 2023.
Cody has been selling items like coffee mugs, planter pots, and hampers at local markets.
Additionally, he’s taken on odd jobs such as lawn mowing and car washing.
Cody’s dad, Daniel, said that the family encouraged him to fundraise to teach him the value of hard work.
“We thought about what would of be a good way to teach Cody a bit about business,” Daniel said.
“(Things like) working for money, and that things don't just get handed to you on a golden platter.
“You’ve got to work for it.
“He took it on board, and we started selling food packs and doing car washes.”
Last year, Cody raised $1200 for the school.
“It felt pretty good,” Cody said.
“I was quite happy and surprised.”
The school has run a competition to see who can raise the most each year since the fire.
Cody said that despite not leading the fundraiser this year, he is more than happy to help and can hopefully match last year’s earnings, or do better.
So far, Cody has put up a stall at the Seymour Rotary Market on Sunday, May 19, and will be holding his final market at the end of his fundraiser on Sunday, June 16.
And he’s doing much more that just that.
“On Sunday (June 2), he's going out to somebody's property to pick up rocks and sticks on their block,” Daniel said.
“He’s selling pins, and pencil cases. He’s collecting cans and bottles.”
Cody recently cashed in cans and bottles for recycling, raising $160.
Cody’s parents Daniel and Tanya said they are extremely proud of their son taking the initiative and stepping up to learn and help at the same time.
“Kids go out there, and they just don't know how to work these days. They just expect everything handed to him so, we didn't want our kids to grow up like that,” Daniel said.
Cody urges everyone to support him and his classmates in their fundraising efforts to help their school.
Daniel and Tanya also wish to acknowledge all the students and parents working hard to raise funds.
