The APCO evaluated Rivalea’s performance across two critical product categories: pork-boned meat and livestock feed bags.
The company excelled, achieving an outstanding overall score of 86%, surpassing industry best practices- highlighting Rivalea’s commitment to sustainable packaging and its dedication to both food safety and quality.
A significant aspect of Rivalea’s success lies in its commitment to recyclability and waste reduction. Over 50% of its pork-boned meat is now packaged in reusable crates, a move that not only minimizes waste but also encourages circularity within the supply chain.
Moreover, 52% of Rivalea’s packaging is derived from recyclable materials such as cardboard and VSP bottom web sealing.
Rivalea’s involvement in the Federal Government’s ‘Big Bag Recovery’ initiative further exemplifies its dedication to sustainable practices. By participating in this product stewardship scheme, Rivalea aims to recycle plastic sacks and bulk bags weighing over 15 kg/l, contributing to a circular solution that extends the lifespan of plastics in the value chain.
Chief Operating Officer of JBS Australia Pork Division Edison Alvares expressed his enthusiasm for Rivalea’s achievement.
“APCO’s recognition acknowledges the ongoing efforts of the Rivalea team who reimagine the capabilities of packaging and collaborate with customers to reduce our impact on the environment.”
Mr Alvares said Rivalea’s initiatives align with Sustainable Packaging Guidelines, with the company’s focus on closing the loop for its feedstock bags. These endeavours mark significant progress towards creating a more circular supply chain and reducing packaging waste during both production and post-consumption.
As part of the JBS Australia Group, Rivalea remains committed to continuous improvement in packaging recyclability and reducing material use and wastage. The company has collaborated with suppliers to trial recyclable Cryovac bags and compostable absorbent pad inserts, showcasing its dedication to staying at the forefront of sustainable packaging practices.
JBS Australia Group Manager Sustainability Sam Churchill said innovation is central to JBS’s sustainability approach.
“It is innovations such as these that lead progress in vital sustainability priorities across our business and supply chain,” he said.
