Seeking grant to protect historic cemetery

“We’d like to fix all the fences – our wish is to have the old cemetery what it looked like.”

The names of 67 internments at the private cemetery are on the cemetery notice board of early settlers’ families, including John Foord 11 (1819-1883) Founder of Wahgunyah. The centenary of his burial was commemorated on January 30, 1983.

A financial assistance grant application will be submitted within one month according to Mr Pleitner.

“I just think it’s right to recognise and respect the people who did so much to set Wahgunyah up,” he said.

“Today’s condition of the cemetery was as a result of a combination of the Covid lockdown, the flood of 2022 and the age, health and the ability of the Trustees.”
