Council resolved at its monthly December meeting, on the motion of Crs Derek Schoen and David Bott to write to Transport for NSW expressing concerns with the proposed speed reduction. Council is seeking further information and public consultation.
In his report for council’s monthly meeting on December 17, director engineering services Theo Panagopoulos advised TfNSW has carried out a review of the speed zone on Redlands Road, Corowa as requested by members of the public because of safety concerns for pedestrians in this area.
“A communication plan will be undertaken by the TfNSW Communications team in early 2025, approximately two weeks prior to the change taking effect.”
Dismay at reductions occurring was expressed by Cr Schoen who said reductions are extending further and further resulting in motorists creeping all the time and at this rate will be “doing 40kmph all the way to Howlong”.
Cr Andrew Kennedy lent his support to the motion, saying the situation was even worse in Mulwala where it’s now only 50kmph going into town.
He said the change from 60 to 50km/h a few years ago means a long, slow run in to the canal bridge from the new speed limit over a kilometre away, with few houses on one side of the road.
“Police just have a field day when patrolling this section – just sitting and booking drivers,” he said at the time.
“The change was put in because pedestrians use the road. They don’t. There are no houses on part of that road.”
