In the early hours of October 17, another fire was lit at the rear of Vinnies in the rubbish bins. This fire quickly got out of hand requiring NSW Fire and Rescue to attend extinguishing it promptly, but not before significant damage had occurred.
As with fire, in the lane behind IGA, the Vinnies fire was captured on CCTV and police identified the perpetrator.
On Saturday, October 19, police, on their way to work, saw the 47-year-old Corowa male responsible and followed him into a local licensed premises.
Police then attended work and returned to the licensed premises where the male was arrested and returned to Corowa Police Station.
The male was charged with a number of offences relating to the fires and other matters and bail refused and will appear at Albury Local Court on Monday, October 21.
Another fire occurred alongside Neil Street Corowa on Thursday, October 17.
Upon noticing the substantial amount of smoke, golfers playing the Par 4, 7th hole running parallel to Neill Street jumped the fence to investigate and quick calls to the ambulance and fire station reduced the amount of grass on fire.
It appeared some small piles of burning leaves were swept up in the wind. There were no suspicious circumstances and no one was injured.
Car collides with cyclist
On Sunday October 6 a local 56-year-old male cyclist was riding through the roundabout at the top of Sanger St Corowa when a 68-year-old male driver drove into the path of the cyclist causing him to collide with the vehicle and go over the bonnet.
Thankfully the rider was wearing a helmet, as he landed on his head. Corowa Police and Corowa VRA were on the scene quickly and looked after traffic and the involved parties.
Police are happy to report that although the rider had a trip to Albury Base Hospital for scans, he was uninjured. The 68-year-old driver received an infringement notice for failing to give way to the cyclist.
Seen this intruder?
The same night an 84-year-old female resident of Rivergum Holiday Park was awoken to an intruder described as “male, 50 year old, 6 foot tall and medium build” entering her site.
The sprightly senior citizen provided the intruder with some choice words before he made his way from her site. Police are seeking any information from the community as to whether anyone can remember seeing anyone fitting the description that night.
$300 on the spot fines for noise
In recent weeks, police have been called to numerous residences for noise complaints and as a result, police have issued Noise Abatement Directions.
Should police be called back to a premises where a Noise Abatement Direction has been issued, $300 on the spot fines can be issued as was the case on October 8 when a Hume St, Corowa address was visited by police and found to be breaching their noise abatement direction.
Shop lifter banned and from pubs
On Saturday, October 15 police were called to Woolworths Corowa regarding a 35-year-old Corowa male shoplifting.
The male received a field court attendance notice to attend Corowa Local Court on October 31 as well as a banning notice from Woolworths.
While speaking to the male, a local publican approached police and discussed this particular male’s behaviour on the weekend of October 12, 2024 in a number of the Bangerang Liquor Accord establishments.
As a result, this male is now banned from this publican’s licensed premises and his name has been referred to the Bangerang Liquor Accord for banning from all premises.
Offensive conduct charge
Police were called to a more serious offence in Woolworth’s Corowa on Thursday, October 17 when a 56-year-old Balldale resident was violently abusing staff at Woolworths.
Staff alerted police to the male’s location in a vehicle at the rear of Woolworths with police directing the male to stop which he did.
When the male alighted from his vehicle he began yelling as he approached police in an aggressive manner.
After the situation was calmed by police, the male’s details were recorded and he received a criminal infringement notice for “Offensive Conduct” as well as a banning notice from Woolworths.
Appeal for CCTV footage
Corowa Police are seeking any CCTV footage of people placing propaganda into mailboxes in Hume Street Corowa and possibly other streets in town.
Police believe the same group behind the white supremacist protest in Corowa on Saturday, October 12 has been placing the propaganda in the mailboxes.
