With a focus on road trauma for this particular time of the year, more than 1000 people were breath tested in Corowa/Rutherglen alone with Corowa and Rutherglen stations simultaneously setting up random breath test sites on both the John Foord Bridge and the Federation Bridge.
“We are happy to say that very few being the Corowa, Mulwala and Rutherglen areas have come under notice for being over the limit,” Corowa Sergeant Stephen Marshall said.
“With NSW Police and Victoria Police working close together again in Corowa and Rutherglen, this signifies a new era in policing this section of the border.
“Traditionally with the influx of tourists to our area, Corowa and Mulwala staff are always busy this time of year, however, with the addition of new staff and Mulwala and Corowa sector operating at near 100 per cent, this has allowed Murray River Police District to roster police to stay in the bigger towns of Mulwala and Corowa providing a 100 per cent greater police presence since COVID.
“This has also allowed police to have a presence on the waterways as well.
“It is this presence that police can attribute to a low number of drink driver detections as well as a minimal number of issues within our licensed premises. In saying this, though, there is always something occurring that requires our attention.”
