This Month’s History Hour at Federation Museum will feature the history of Pise construction and how a local prominent architect, A.C Macknight, was one of the pioneers to bring the method to Australia.
The October History Hour at the Federation Museum, Queen Street Corowa will be held on Thursday, October 17 at 2.00pm.
Mr Aaron Nicholls from Regional Design Service and Mr Simon Killeen from the Rutherglen Historical Society will be present to speak about A.C and C.H Macknight who were prominent architects in the Riverina and North East Victoria during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.
Aaron states that once you know the ‘Macknight style,’ it is really exciting to drive around and spot a Macknight house. The aim after this History Hour will be for attendees to be able to spot a Macknight house too.
The Macknights were instrumental in introducing their particular style of pise construction into the built environment in the local district. Many older residents will remember Dr Barnard’s pise house beside the RSL Club. Mr and Mrs Adlington were the last residents before it became incorporated into the RSL Clubhouse. The accompanying photos show workers constructing the house.
Macknights were the architects for this construction. They were also prominent in other styles of building too. What is a ‘Macknight characteristic’? That is what people will find out at the next History Hour. Visitors will also be able to see tools used in the construction of pise buildings and also some Macknight plans for local buildings.
Everyone is welcome to come along to this free event and to enjoy a cup of tea, coffee and Anzac biscuit while looking around the Federation Museum or chatting with the guest speakers.
