The annual awards recognise students, teachers, staff and parents across the state who have made major contributions to their school communities and serve as role models to their peers. Mr Douglas is among 105 individuals across the state to be recognised.
The Head Teacher of History and English said the award was an honour.
“I love teaching and the relationships that we are able to foster with students and the community,” Mr Douglas said.
“It is very special to be recognised for the work that you do, but I think it is important to note that, as a school, Corowa High School promotes student engagement and achievement on a regular basis, which has been particularly apparent during the recent COVID-19 school lockdowns.
“I'd like to think that an award for one teacher at Corowa High School is an award for all of the hard work and dedication shown by staff every day.
“As I said, I am very honoured to receive this award this year and I'm keen to get back into the classroom as soon as possible!”
Principal Dr Joanne Bellette said the award recognises Mr Douglas’ professionalism and leadership across the school community.
“Our school and community are incredibly proud of Mr Douglas,” she said.
“This Minister's Award for Excellence in Teaching is a fantastic recognition for an exceptional teacher who inspires and engages his students and who has worked closely with our school community to build a passion for learning about local history.”
NSW Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning Sarah Mitchell said the 2021 awards highlighted the excellence underpinning the NSW public school system even as schools, students and teachers have navigated the challenges of natural disasters and a global pandemic.
“These awards reveal that regardless of the circumstances, our students, teachers, principals and the school community are always striving for learning and teaching excellence,” Ms Mitchell said.
