That shocking, approximate 5-foot sink hole which appeared towards the middle of Gooramadda Road about a kilometre from the T intersection with Up River Road some 10kms from Rutherglen exploded to an enormous size two days later, on Tuesday, November 15.
It covers the whole road. “It’s massive. It’s six metres deep by six metres wide. It’s like a creek is running through it,” Rutherglen Police Sergeant Mick Savage told The Free Press.
Barricades, naturally, have been erected. “Follow advisory signs,” is the firm message to all road users by Sgt Savage.
Police advice in any situation is rive to conditions.
“That’s always the advice but with so many potholes around, it’s particularly important that drivers slow down to avoid nasty situations,” Sgt Savage said.
“Some drivers have been caught doing 115 kmph elsewhere in the Rutherglen area.”
The nasty road situations can involve car damage including cuts to tyres and consequential substantial costs to get repaired, or even worse. Especially in cases like Gooramadda Road.
“These instances are avoidable if motorists follow signs and slow down,” Sgt Savage said.
Local residents are angry about the state of the road and its use by heavy vehicles and have been campaigning for years to have Gooramadda Road upgraded.
Advice from Indigo Shire Council is the road will be closed until at least a full engineering assessment is undertaken.
