Wangaratta Hardcourt have the bragging rights over cross-town rivals Wangaratta Lawn after they dismantled the Lawn side on Saturday to record a comfortable victory.
Hardcourt pounced early winning the first 2 sets to set the ball rolling and from there Lawn were always playing catch up tennis and never looked a threat.
Lawn fought hard to bridge the gap and broke even after their disastrous start but the foundation for the Hardcourt victory was set in stone from the outset and they were never going to relinquish their hold on the match.
Hardcourt’s Scott Solimo, Mario Pane and Chris Lucas showed why they have been the best for a long time with a faultless display.
Lawn were best served by Emily Brown, Carolyn Shaw and Kim Brown.
Chiltern were no match for top of the ladder Corowa Blue although there was a glimmer of hope early for Chiltern when the women strolled of the court winners, but it was all downhill from there as Corowa Blue asserted their authority and showed Chiltern what is required to be in the top echelon.
Corowa’s was an even team performance, but Darrell Spencer shone above the rest and proved that not all super hero’s wear their underwear on the outside.
Treena McNair, Brodie McKinnar and Erin Mckinnar battled against the odds for Chiltern.
Section 2
Corowa have finally returned to the winners list against Wangaratta Hardcourt courtesy of a few imports.
The loss for Hardcourt may have drastic ramifications later in the season and their next round may hold the key to their final’s aspirations.
Hardcourt lost a couple of tie break sets that would have given them extra points, but it was the steadiness of the Corowa players in a crisis that prevailed.
Hardcourt’s Chris Nicol was outstanding for the day and the youngsters Lucas Alexander and Curtis Hines weren’t disgraced.
Janice Cook, David Strachan and Aaron Spencer were the backbone of the Corowa performance. Myrrhee are beginning to put together a string of impressive performances and Saturday’s effort against Boorhaman was in line with the previous weeks’.
Boorhaman never looked likely of causing an upset although they did win the first set of the day which proved to be the only blimp on the radar for Myrrhee as they cruised to victory and solidified 2nd place on the ladder.
Myrrhee’s Dylan Van Berlo proved not only can he mark a football but can wield a tennis racquet with aplomb as well.
Dylan had many contributors in Robyn Oliver, Rob Seymour and Daniel Griffin.
Once again it was Boorhaman’s evergreen Shirley Fuller that lead charge and was supported by Hayley Thomson and Jane McInnes.
Wahgunyah Red continued their impressive season with another faultless display against Everton White on Saturday.
Wahgunyah are proving the fairytale story of NERTA after coming from Section 3 last year to be considered one of the major contenders in Section 2.
Everton White’s leaders Steve Cole and Eleisha Kneebone were impressive and with Mel Hellibrand and Jo Baron providing resistance to the Wahgunyah side, Everton White were competitive.
Everton Blue notched up another victory over Wahgunyah Blue on Saturday and in doing have kept keeping themselves within throwing distance of 2nd position on the ladder.
Wahgunyah were always swimming against the tide in this match, as Everton Blue’s depth was the telling difference between the two teams and victory was ensured from the start.
Everton’s Noel Kneebone has reigned as one of the oligarchs of Section 2 for a long time
and his display on Saturday was Roger Federer-esque full of grace and poise.
Alan Wood and Dook Gibb weren’t far behind.
Wahgunyah’s best were Fiona Rose, Priscilla Black, Gordon Sawyer and Glen Bobbin.
