The Basin Plan’s impacts on farmers, the region’s potential to become a green energy powerhouse, and housing investment were key issues raised by the group over August 19 and 20.
The six member councils – Campaspe, Gannawarra, Loddon, Mildura, Moira and Swan Hill – were represented by MRGC Chair and Goonawarra Council Shire Mayor Ross Stanton, alongside mayors and chief executive officers.
The group spoke with the Water Minister Tanya Plibersek, raising concerns about the government’s water purchase program and its impact on farmers, food prices, and irrigation sustainability.
“The scatter gun, open tender approach to water purchase from our irrigation districts, with no planning, is going to put input costs up,” Cr Stanton said.
The MRCG also spoke with the Energy Minister Chris Bowen, outlining the benefits of renewable energy investment for the region’s manufacturing base.
“With our location, excellent solar and wind resources, the incoming transmission line investment, northern Victoria can be a major contributor and stands to really benefit from the energy transition,” Cr Stanton said.
Housing and infrastructure investments were also flagged with ministers, which the MRGC said would encourage people to relocate to northern Victoria.
