Paul (better known as Bub) Brooks and Steve (Thommo) Thomas have joined the Southern Cross Cannonball Classic 2025, under the name of ‘Team Tag Along’.
Riding their vintage motorbikes, they will start in Darwin on May 9 and finish in Victor Harbour, South Australia on May 22.
The event, for motorbikes pre-1948, is held to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
It has already attracted 75 entrants and expects to reach more than 100.
Bub and Thommo have been mates and riding bikes together for more than 40 years.
Although their 1950 and 1960 Harley Davidsons are not old enough to officially contest the prize, they are looking forward to taking part.
Bub and Thommo plan to leave Finley immediately after attending the Anzac Day dawn service, with their motorbikes safely stowed away in the purpose built container on Thommo’s work trailer, with their support driver Jim Muirhead.
They will have a week relaxing and fishing at Dundee before the ride and will be joined by their wives, Wendy and Denise, in Darwin as part of the support team.

The north-south route will cover 4300km over 14 days and involve seeing a number of landscapes including the thermal pools at Mataranka, to the ochre soils of Alice Springs.
After detouring west for a rest day at Ayers Rock, they will then travel south again through the opal fields of Coober Pedy and then onto picturesque Wilpena Pound.
During the stopover at Uluru (Ayers Rock), support driver Jim will hand over to Glen Fox.
Bub and Thommo have set a target of $2000 and, at the time of this report, have already raised $750.
Further information and the opportunity to contribute to their fundraising can be found by going to their website https://cannonball-classic-2025.raiselysite.com/steve-thomas.
