Edward River Council has six amazing employment opportunities open for apprentices and trainees across various council departments.
ERC people and culture business partner Amy Donaldson said the new roles support the council in its aims to serve the community and provide personal and professional growth opportunities for its residents.
Four of the apprenticeships and trainees are over two years, while one will be over 12 months and the mechanic apprenticeship will last four years.
“These positions provide council with an opportunity to grow our own workforce, and build skill sets in the community,” Mrs Donaldson said.
“We’re engaging the younger generation, and that also feeds in to council’s succession planning.
“These are entirely new roles to the council structure, and the trainees will make up between four and six per cent of our workforce.
“They are among 13 positions we’re recruiting for right now, with the others being existing qualified roles.“
The positions on offer include:
• Trainee plant operator - roads construction (two positions available): You will receive hands-on training to operate various types of plant machinery used in the construction and maintenance of roads. Under the guidance of experienced operators, you will gain invaluable knowledge of the equipment and techniques necessary to contribute to high-quality construction projects. Two year fixed term position.
• Apprentice mechanic: You will work under the direct supervision of the head mechanic and other workshop staff, gaining valuable experience while learning the skills required to maintain and repair our plant fleet and small plant items. Four year fixed term position.
• Apprentice parks and gardens (horticulturalist) - You will gain valuable hands-on experience in maintaining and enhancing public parks, gardens, and recreational areas, all while undertaking on-the-job training as part of a structured parks and gardens apprenticeship. Two year fixed term position.
• Trainee administration officer: You will receive hands-on training and mentorship to develop essential administrative skills and knowledge. You will work alongside experienced professionals to assist in delivering high-quality customer services and support various administrative functions. One year fixed term position.
• Learning and support trainee: Over the course of the traineeship, you’ll work closely with the people and culture team, assisting in key department functions and gaining practical, real-world experience across various areas of human resources. You will complete a Certificate IV in Human Resource Management during the two-year fixed term position.
Mrs Donaldson encouraged anyone with an interest to apply, and said council would be looking for “passion and determination” from applicants.
Applications for apprenticeship and trainee positions close early next year, on either January 5 or January 12.
“The job market is tough across the nation, so you have to show that passion and personality,” she said.
“There are always avenues to execute what you want in life, and this could be one for you.
“Through an apprenticeship you can learn the practical side of the job, and build on that.”
