Year 5 and 6 students decorated the front of the station with festive tinsel and decorations as part of their regular holiday lead-up celebration.
Katamatite Primary Principal Jason Whiteley said the school has been coordinating with the local kinder to decorate the station for the past three years.
“It shows we’re all part of the one community and helps bring Katamatite together and all supporting one another,” Mr Whiteley said.
“We’re very grateful for the opportunity.”
Leading Senior Constable Chris Westrope said the students had done the decorations this year completely by themselves.
“I said you guys are old enough now, you decorate how you want it ... just one of the teachers gave them a bit of a hand,” he said.
“They loved it, they were so good.”
Sen Constable Westrope said decorating the police station presents the students with a unique opportunity for positive interactions with the police.
“People don’t realise we don’t want to be seen as the bad guys, we want the kids to approach us ... we want kids to have positive experiences with police while they’re young,” he said.
He was also able to show small groups of children through the station and demonstrate some of the equipment to them.
“They tried lifting my vest and they were all amazed at how heavy it was ... I also showed them how to use the laser (speed detection device),” he said.
“They were so good and so well behaved.
“I said to them, if you see me you can call me Westy, say G’day Westy and give me a wave.”
