Hook, line and sinker — fishing day deemed a success

Proving to be a fun day for all, the Kyabram and District Dementia Support Group and Friends held their annual activity day on Wednesday, February 8 at Uncle Bob’s Park all-abilities fishing platform in Nathalia.

In collaboration with the Kyabram Anglers Club, dementia advocate Mick Simpson, the Kyabram Community and Learning Centre and Kyabram District Health Service, the annual fishing event provides a fun and relaxing day for people living with dementia.

Members of the club cooked a BBQ lunch and assisted participants from both the Kyabram and District Dementia Group and Kyabram District Health Service social support group with their fishing.

Kyabram Angling Club member and co-ordinator for this event Peter Dawson was pleased with the efforts put in by all involved.

"The sports clubs, service clubs and service organisations continue to interact and support each other with their endeavours which can only further build a stronger community,“ Mr Dawson said.

“The members at KAC are keen to 'do their bit'.”

President of the Goulburn Valley Association of Angling Clubs and member of the Nathalia Angling Club, Roland Huber was involved in building the all-abilities fishing platform in 2017 and said events like this made it worth it.

“They enjoyed getting out and about,” Mr Huber said.

“A lot of them haven’t acquired this ability and some were probably good fisherman beforehand and unless we provide that opportunity for them, they won’t do it, and when they’re out fishing they really enjoy it.

“It brings something out in them you wouldn’t see.

“There’s a spirit and enthusiasm about going to the waterway and throwing a line and catching a fish.”
