The Art of Ageing is a photographic exhibition that celebrates the value, experience and contribution that older people bring, and it also challenges out-dated perceptions of ageing.
Federation Council Mayor Patrick Bourke said the exhibition comprises 24 images taken by talented NSW photographers. Each photograph is accompanied by a short story highlighting the subject's experiences and reflections on ageing.
“Council is really proud to support such an initiative which supports Councils Ageing Well Strategy 2018-2022 to promote positive images and educate the community about the diversity of ageing, and help combat stereotypes of older people,” he said.
“On a local note, also, I am very pleased to advise that out of the 24 portraits from across the state captured in the exhibition, two Federation Council residents are featured, being renowned Scrap metal Sculptor Andrew Whitehead, and local farmer Peter Driscoll, both from the Urana district.”
Well-recognised sculpture artist, Andrew Whitehead, works at his property near Urana producing incredible artworks that have been shipped around Australia and internationally, with 12 public artworks on display across the country.
Peter Driscoll has just recently moved off his property in Urana where he had lived since 1973. It is where he and his wife, Moy, raised their family.
He was born into farming and for over 40 years loved working the land, navigating the seasons, good and bad, and living the lifestyle of a farmer with his family.
The NSW Department of Communities and Justice have commissioned the exhibition photographs and narratives to inspire others to embrace and live life to the fullest.
The participants are all accomplished and unconventional who have carved out interesting and active lives for themselves to keep them young.
The exhibition forms part of the Department’s commitment towards improving respect for and social inclusion of older people and to recognize their valuable contributions to the broader community.
The Art of Ageing will be on display at the Corowa ArtSpace from Friday, August 6 to Sunday, August 29, 2021. The Corowa ArtSpace is open 9.30am – 4.30pm Fridays and 9am – 2pm Saturdays and Sundays.
