Dramatic crash shakes powerboat race

Rescue teams were on the scene within seconds after two powerboats collided during the weekend’s Australian Formula Powerboat Grand Prix.

Two powerboats collided on Lake Mulwala last weekend as drivers fought to gain a competitive advantage in the Australian Formula Powerboat Grand Prix.

Neither New Zealand international Nick Coles nor Victorian Ewan Bricker were willing to relinquish the contested space causing the 115mph collision while negotiating a disputed corner.

Both boats flipped on impact, forcing the drivers into an underwater escape.

No-one was injured in the collision and AFPGP treasurer Trent Duvall said he was happy with the swift rescue response.

“The rescue team arrived on the scene within seconds,” Mr Duvall said.

“Before we knew it both drivers were checked by the paramedics and all was OK.”
