Council revisits funding for school crossing supervisors

The Strathbogie Shire Council's newly elected members have decided to take another look at funding for the school crossing supervisor program, a move that's been warmly received by State Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland.

This follows the previous council's decision to withdraw from the program in March last year, arguing that the Victorian Government should cover the costs.

After the state government stepped in, crossings on state-operated roads near several schools in Euroa and Nagambie received supervision.

However, Nagambie Primary School, located on a council road, was left without funding for supervisors.

In a unanimous vote earlier this month, the council resolved to reinstate supervisors at Nagambie Primary School's Goulburn St crossing in the new year.

Ms Cleeland emphasised the necessity of funding all crossings in the electorate to safeguard children.

“Funding disputes between our councils and the state government were not helping anyone, and instead put the safety of our children at risk,” Ms Cleeland said.

“I look forward to seeing more actions like this from the council as they rebuild trust in the community following a disastrous period of council monitors, councillor suspensions, and frustration from local ratepayers.”

She also commended Nagambie Primary School principal, Rob French, for his advocacy for children's safety in the area.
