A member of the Corowa District Historical Society is endeavouring to collate the massive collection of information which has been collected by the Society, relating to this event in Corowa's history.
Initially it is planned there will be a shop window display in Sanger Street. This display will not be in the window in which the model, which is pictured here, was first displayed in 1990. What is in those premises now? A local eight year old has also developed a model of how she imagined the High Temperature Incinerator would be way back in 1990.
The aim of this article is to combine two projects: The history of Sanger Street project and the collation and summary of events during September-December 1990 when the Corowa district was threatened with the establishment of a High Temperature Incinerator.
Eventually there will be a display in the Federation Museum telling the story of how the community, led by the Concerned Citizens Committee, worked together to convince the various governing bodies that this incinerator was not wanted in this district.
If there are members of the community who wish to contribute memories from this interesting few months then please contact the Federation Museum: cdhsinc@iinet.net.au
Group formed
Steve Kent, Karen Lewis and Tony Hanrahan are the members of a group formed to put together a history of all local premises in Sanger Street.
“We have been extremely fortunate to have information which has been provided by various historical groups and the recollections of many people,” Steve said.
“However, what we don’t have is nay information which you may have on your current of previous premises – who operated a business on your premises in years gone by? What type of business was it?”
The intention is to have a series of photographs backed up by stories for all premises which will be shown at the museum and council offices.
The group would love to hear from you and/or email sangersthstory@gmail.com
