The young cricketers bested teams from eight much larger schools including Albury High School, Trinity Anglican College and the Scots School Albury.
Last Wednesday’s grand final clash against Albury High School was an exciting one in which local students showcased an array of impressive skills and outstanding sportsmanship.
Corowa won the toss and elected to bat first, taking advantage of the perfect conditions at Morris Park.
The local team lost Captain, Jack Eales, early before Issac Dickinson (10) and Jay Lavis (22) moved the score to 37 before the second wicket fell.
After facing the impressive bowling talents of Albury High School, the home team were underwhelmed by their batting score when they were bowled for 79 runs.
Despite the challenge, Corowa were confident as they headed in to field.
Isaac Dickinson took an early wicket before Albury moved their score to 38 runs.
Star bowler, Ethan Lane, then took two wickets in two balls to open the door. Tyler Abley took a sharp chance in the slips off the bowling of Jay Lavis, but at 4 for 52, there was still a lot of work to do.
The tables began to turn when Jack Eales trapped Albury’s top scorer.
Jayden Forge dropped what would have been an all-time great outfield catch, yet this somehow lifted Corowa’s spirits. Isaac took 3 for 2 in an inspired spell as Blake Keenes and Jay took wickets at the other end.
At the end of a thrilling match, Corowa dismissed Albury High School for 62 runs, winning by a margin of 17 runs to become undefeated champions for their fourth year in a row.
Corowa High School’s cricket coordinator Mr Craig Fisher was very impressed with his team’s performance last week.
“Our junior boys are to be commended on their never-say-die approach to the match and the skills they have developed at the hands of the Corowa Cricket Club,” he said.
“We’re looking forward to defending our title in Term 4 and further developing skills throughout the year.”
