The Corowa branch is no exception, with volunteers like Pauline Nixon and Margaret Ward dedicating their time and efforts to the cause for over 20 years.
The Corowa group meets on the first Monday of every month in the CWA rooms in River St, where they hold a short meeting to discuss activities and share friendship over a cuppa. The monthly meetings are friendly get-togethers, and the group holds several fundraising activities throughout the year, with all monies raised sent to Red Cross Headquarters to provide assistance to countries or towns in need.
In addition to fundraising, members have volunteered to receive training in offering emergency assistance when necessary.
They were even activated to assist during the Mulwala tornado, coordinating efforts and directing people to safety. The group also offers voluntary assistance with Blood Bank Collections, held every three months at Uncle Toby’s Wahgunyah.
“It’s an institution you’ve always heard of, and aware of the good they do locally and internationally,” Pauline said.
“Part of the reason why I joined 20 years ago is they were such a nice group of ladies. I was still working, and they were very welcoming.
“We all work towards a common goal- to alleviate the human suffering which is one of the organisation's aims .”
Margaret said she had moved from Melbourne and thought it was a great way to meet new people and do her part for the community.
“The group opens your eyes to what’s going on in the world,” she said.
“The Corowa group is such a lovely group of ladies. We’ve formed some really close friendships.”
Pauline said the group has had some fantastic fundraisers over the years.
“We are very lucky. People in this community have been so generous and we can’t thank them for their support enough,” she said.
The two Red Cross women also volunteer elsewhere- Pauline with Vinnies and the River St Wetlands rehabilitation group and Margaret with the Corowa CWA and the Corowa Show.
“Volunteering is the giving of your time without expecting payment. It’s very rewarding.”
