Members gathered at the event to honour the sacrifices and service of Australian veterans who fought in one of the longest conflicts of the 20th century.
Corowa RSL Sub-Branch President Lesley Rinehart opened the ceremony with a poignant speech, reflecting on the Vietnam War’s significance.
“The Vietnam War was one of the longest conflicts of the 20th century,” Mrs Rinehart said.
“It began in October 1965 and lasted until 1975. From the arrival of the first members of the Australian team in 1962, over 60,000 ADF personnel, including ground troops, Air Force, and Navy, served in Vietnam over 10 years. The last combat troops came home in March 1975.”
Mrs Rinehart highlighted the staggering costs of the war, noting that 523 Australians lost their lives, and over 3,000 were evacuated due to illness and injuries. She also paid tribute to the Australian Navy's significant role, mentioning the contributions of HMAS Sydney, known as the ‘Vung Tau Ferry,’ and other naval vessels that provided critical support to the troops.
The service continued with a powerful rendition of ‘I Was Only 19’ by local musician Geoff Wright, a song that resonated deeply with those in attendance.
The atmosphere was further enriched by a moving slideshow, put together by members Donna King and Sue Davies, which depicted the war’s impact and the enduring legacy of those who served.
The commemoration concluded with the playing of the National Anthem and the solemn recitation of The Ode, reminding all present of the courage and sacrifice of Vietnam veterans.
“I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended and supported our Vietnam Veterans Day commemoration,” President Rinehart said.
“Your presence and participation mean so much, not only to our veterans but to the entire community. Special thanks to Geoff Wright for his performance, and to Donna King and Sue Davies for the beautiful slide show that truly captured the spirit of the day.”
Vietnam Veterans Day serves as a crucial reminder of the sacrifices made by Australian service members during the Vietnam War, ensuring that their bravery and service are never forgotten.
