The club, which meets at Thompson’s Beach, has 30 members of various ages and abilities.
They meet every Tuesday at 4.30pm, Thursday at 5pm, and on Saturdays at 9am.
Club president Damien Guthrie said members could do a wide variety of activities.
“We do recreational paddling. So just cruising along and having fun,” Mr Guthrie said.
“We also have a few paddlers who compete nationally and that is in a few disciplines from marathon to sprint paddling and canoe polo.
“For the more adventurous we also do wild water paddling.”
The club is open to anyone regardless of age and has equipment for members to use for less than $100 a year.
Mr Guthrie said new members who had never experienced canoeing need not worry as they were fully supported and guided by more experienced members of the club.
He believes joining the Cobram Barooga Canoe Club was a great way to socialise in an exciting, friendly atmosphere and that opportunities with canoeing were endless.
“It’s a sport that one can take to whatever level they want, be it recreational to international,” Mr Guthrie said.
Even for those not seeking competition Mr Guthrie said canoeing provided an opportunity for participants to get outdoors and become fit.
“It is a great way to get out on the river and to fully immerse yourself in the environment,” he said. “It is also a fantastic opportunity for fitness.”
For those with any hesitations Mr Guthrie believes the best way to see if canoeing was for you was to give it a go.
“Anyone can do it and there is a free one-month trial membership.”
