“You don’t have to be able to sing, just come along and enjoy yourself,” she said.
“Everyone enjoys the social singing.”
Ms Fitzgerald is a member of Shepparton’s branch of Sing Australia, which aims to bring people from various backgrounds together to make happy connections and to sing in a non-judgmental environment.
“We are connected to Sing Australia, which is a great network of groups around Australia,” she said.
“We have an annual meeting of all the groups around Australia and even overseas trips.
“We’ve been going for 20 years. The anniversary was last year. Coming up in March it will be 21 years. I’ve been involved for more than 10, but we’ve still got some of our 20-year members, which is wonderful.”
The group sings songs from a range of genres in a variety of places, including retirement villages and nursing homes.
The times are changing for Sing Australia Shepparton, though, with the group switching from Tuesday evening gatherings to Thursday mornings, and Ms Fitzgerald would love more people to enjoy the benefits of singing.
“It helps with your breathing, helps socially, meeting other people and enjoying their company,” she said.
Sing Australia resumes after the holiday period on Thursday, February 2 at the Shepparton Baptist Church in Longstaff St from 9.30am to 11am.
