In Australia, the Mothers’ Union began in Tasmania more than 100 years ago and many parishes started branches across Australia that were adopted by dioceses.
The Seymour Mothers’ Union branch began in 1959 and Muriel Andrea, who turns 96 on June 19, was one of the original members alongside her own mother.
In 2021, Muriel’s daughter Elaine Youngman also became a member, making it three generations of the family to have belonged to the branch.
In recent times, the National Mothers’ Union has requested that branches raise funds towards a bi-annual project for its overseas branches and outreach to support women in northern Australia and neighbouring countries.
Members from Avenel, Nagambie and Seymour will gather on Thursday, June 23, to celebrate the mothers’ union’s 63rd year in the district and invite members of other local churches, community groups, family and friends to the morning melodies fundraiser with entertainer Noel Pearson.
This will be the group’s second attempt at hosting the morning after last year’s event was postponed due to pandemic restrictions.
This year’s fundraiser will be held in the Anglican Christ Church hall, Nagambie, starting from 10am. Entry is a $10 donation and a morning tea, raffle, door prizes and a trading table will be available on the day.
Central Goulburn Mothers’ Union branch president Mary Greenshields has been a member for almost 50 years and she is calling for the community to support the cause.
Mothers’ union rules mean this is the only fundraiser it will run in 2022.
Ms Greenshields hopes the event will lead to more members joining the union.
“The mothers’ union is looking for new members, male or female, single, married, divorced or widowed to carry on this 146-year-old tradition,” she said.
She recognised members as “faithful and spiritual members of the church, and sharing Christ’s love by encouraging, strengthening and supporting marriage and family life”.
