Bubs and Bowls is an initiative by Bowls Victoria in partnership with VicHealth. The program began two years ago and aims to get new and expecting mums and dads out of the house and onto the green to meet other local parents.
Since its inception, Secretary of the Rutherglen Bowling Club John Ross has voluntarily hosted the weekly meetup providing tips and tricks to parents on how to improve their bowling game.
“We were one of the first clubs to take up the initiative outside of metropolitan Melbourne. Most of the parents didn’t know each other when we first started it, so it has been really good to see the friendships come out of it,” Mr Ross told The Free Press.
Coordinator Amber Welsh said Bubs and Bowls was an opportunity for parents with young children to meet in a comfortable environment, share stories and know that they are not alone.
“The meet ups are much more than just a go on the green,” Ms Welsh said.
“Obviously we couldn’t meet over the last few months because of COVID restrictions, so it was great news when they eased.
“People who moved to the area or had new babies in that time now have the opportunity to get out of the house, get active and meet other local young parents.”
Each week Bubs and Bowls meet on a Thursday morning at 10am. Ms Welsh said there was plenty of interest for an evening session too.
“We are starting twilight bowls on Wednesdays from October 14 onwards. It will be perfect for mums and dads who work during the day to come on down and participate too,” Ms Welsh said.
As Bubs and Bowls celebrates two years in Rutherglen, Ms Welsh extended her thanks to John Ross for volunteering his time to host the meet ups.
“We are so grateful to John for all that he has done. He has been so generous with his time in helping us and we truly thank him,” she said.
