It was a case of second time lucky, after the original fundraiser date of July 27 had to be postponed due to an unexpected power outage in town.
The event, which took place on the club’s dance floor, saw Club Corowa Duty Manager Alex Bock and the well-known Jo-Anne Pavey bravely shave their heads in support of regional breast cancer nurses.
The initiative was spearheaded by event coordinator Kay Blakeley, who has been a devoted advocate of the McGrath Foundation since 2014. Her dedication to the cause was evident as she expressed her delight with both the turnout and the funds raised.
“I'm thrilled with the support we've received from the community,” Ms. Blakeley said.
“The money raised will go directly to supporting the McGrath Foundation's regional breast cancer nurses, who provide vital care and support to those affected by breast cancer in rural and regional areas.”
The head shave was the highlight of the evening, drawing cheers and applause from the audience as Alex and Jo-Anne took their seats on the dance floor.
Adding a special touch to the night, Jo-Anne’s son, comedian Blake Pavey, video called his mother during the shave and generously donated $1,000 each to Alex and his mum, boosting the fundraising total.
After the shave, the pair earned many compliments from the crowd, particularly Alex who had been sporting curls resembling a 70s-style cut. Their fresh appearances were the talk of the night, with both receiving plenty of admiration for their boldness.
“I want to give a huge thank you to Alex and Jo for their incredible bravery and support during our head shave event on Saturday night,” Ms Blakeley said.
“Thank you to all the wonderful community members who helped by rattling tins, and a special thank you to our hairdressers Naomi Robb (Gnomes Mobile Hairdressing) and Erin Galloway (BMH Hair Studio) for doing the shave on the night.”
The funds raised will help the McGrath Foundation continue providing essential care and support to individuals and families affected by breast cancer in regional areas.
Since 2005, over 137,000 families have received assistance, highlighting the McGrath Foundation's vital role in breast cancer care nationwide.
