The picturesque backdrop of the Murray River served as a fitting tribute to a woman who had a deep connection with nature and her community.
Born on July 11, 1951, in Melbourne, Maryann Herbert passed away on September 17, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and dedication. The memorial service was a heartfelt remembrance of her life, featuring contributions from her family and friends.
Eulogies were delivered by her children, Jacqui Tourle, Kim Williams, and Lachy Herbert, providing a glimpse into Maryann’s life journey.
Born to John and Joyce Carah, she enjoyed a joyful childhood filled with love, support, and opportunities in music and sports. Maryann attended Chelmsford and Melbourne Girls Grammar, and pursued her passion for teaching at Toorak Teacher’s College.
In 1972, her life took a beautiful turn when she met Alastair, whom she would marry on December 12, 1973, at St. John’s Anglican Church in Toorak. The couple embarked on adventures together, including a memorable six-month backpacking trip through Europe in 1976.
They eventually settled in Corowa in 1979, where they raised their children, Jacqueline, Kimberley, and Lachlan.
Maryann was an active member of the Corowa community, particularly known for her involvement in the Corowa Swimming Club-where she was honoured as a Life Member, WIRES, volunteering at various organisations, and her leadership in the Girl Guides.
She inspired countless young girls and served as a mentor and role model for many during her 35 years of dedication to the Guiding community.
Her passion and commitment earned her numerous awards, including the Corowa Citizen of the Year in 2003.
Beyond her community involvement, Maryann was an avid traveller who cherished every moment exploring the world. Her love for wildlife led her to volunteer as a WIRES carer, and she was also dedicated to environmental conservation through her involvement with Landcare.
Maryann’s love extended to her seven grandchildren, whom she actively engaged with, bringing joy and activities into their lives. Her family will remember her as a driven, determined, and humble achiever who encouraged others to embrace life and make the most of it.
The service concluded with heartfelt tributes from Maryann’s closest friends Sue Rahilly and Jenny Lethbridge, who shared touching stories about their time with Maryann, as well as a beautiful photo tribute.
The memorial service, conducted by Tobin Brothers Funerals was a poignant tribute to a remarkable woman whose memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
Following the service, the Corowa Girl Guides, joined by other Guides near and far, gathered on the banks of the Murray River, to pay their respects and honour their beloved leader and mentor.
Guided by leaders Sonia True and Natalie Smith, the Guides began their tribute by singing “Canadian Vespers,” “Daylight Taps,” and “Bravo.” In a symbolic gesture Sonia and Natalie released gum leaves into the Murray River. The leaves, gently floating downstream, represented “canoes” gliding peacefully on the water—a tribute to Maryann’s adventurous spirit and her love for the great outdoors.
Maryann Louise Herbert’s legacy of love, kindness, and community spirit will continue to inspire generations to come.
