Mulwala will host Federation Council’s Australia Day Ceremony on Thursday, January 26, 2023 but subsequent years to host the event are up for grabs.
At the suggestion of Cr David Fahey OAM, council will approach groups in smaller villages to ascertain interest in hosting the annual award-presentation occasion.
“Villages like Balldale, Rand and Morundah could be interested. Could we give the community groups the opportunity, asking groups for expressions of interest? It’s just something we could consider, for whenever,” Cr Fahey said at council’s monthly meeting on August 15.
“I wholeheartedly support Cr Fahey,” Cr Aaron Nicholls said.
At this stage, after the Australia Day Ceremony in Corowa this year, Howlong and Urana are earmarked to host the event in 2024 and 2025. “It can be our fall-back position,” Federation Council’s General Manager Adrian Butler said.
Acting mayor Shaun Whitechurch said the larger towns attract more people but backed the idea to seek expressions of interest from smaller villages, for council’s further consideration.
