This is the question being put to villages for the next Australia Day Event which is a special time of the year for local residents to celebrate what makes the region a great place to live and visit.
Council is interested in working with a community group, organisation or business that is passionate and already doing wonderful things to enrich the community, to help co-ordinate the official Australia Day Ceremony.
The event will be held on Friday, January 26, 2024 at a township within the Federation region, excluding Corowa, Urana, Howlong and Urana.
These towns are on the regular schedule, and council is keen to see if there are other towns interested in hosting this great event.
Formalities of the event will be co-ordinated by council, including the welcome address, Welcome to Country, citizenship ceremonies, award presentations, ambassador guest speaker, flag raising ceremony and the singing of the National Anthem.
“I’m certainly keen to see if any other town or village is interested but in the past there hasn’t been much interest forthcoming in hosting the whole Federation Council area event,” deputy mayor Shaun Whitechurch said at council’s February meeting. “Let’s see this time.”
The successful community group, organisation or business will work with council to organise the event on the day, with contributions to theming, set up and additional activities.
Organisers will have the support of council staff to deliver an event that is family friendly, inclusive and provides an opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate the occasion.
Councillors of Federation Council are keen to see if the invitation is taken up. Last year’s event in Mulwala attracted about 200 people.
A percentage of the total Australia Day budget will be given to the community group to cover costs relating to the Australia Day Event.
Interested community groups can download the Expression of Interest Application Form from council’s website www.federationcouncil.nsw.gov.au EOI Submissions are being invited until 5pm, Friday 28th April 2023. Submissions are to be made in writing and addressed to Federation Council’s Community Projects and Events Officer.
