The CEDA Nepal program aims to provide students with a well-rounded experience in a developing country while addressing cultural, environmental, developmental and adventurous aspects of the program.
Aleisha applied for the program and was successful after participating in the Year 9 Future Makers program last year which involved a hike up Mt Bogong.
Aleisha is one of only 10 students across Victoria invited to be part of the Nepal program.
“I was very surprised to be selected,” she told The Free Press.
“I’ve been on plane before but never been overseas so I’m very excited.”
The students involved in the 21-day day program will have the opportunity to gain insight into Nepali culture, experience various cultural experiences and visit heritage sights, including the Swaymbhunath Temple and Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu.
Students will have the opportunity to attend Kathmandu University High School (KUHS), which is located in Dhulikhel, for a cultural and educational exchange with their host families. They will walk trekking routes Sir Edmund Hillary trekked along, visit monasteries, engage with locals, and visit traditional Nepali homes during the trek.
Students will also address environmental issues and contribute to local development projects while camping and trekking through the Solo Khumbu region of Nepal.
Before departing for Nepal, Aleisha and her fellow students will attend a three-day program launch at 15 Mile Creek. This will include team building activities and discussions around topics such as flights, hygiene, communication, personal care, and equipment lists.
Aleisha, who plays hockey for Corowa Rutherglen United, told the Free Press she is looking forward to the experience in Nepal and has started going to the gym to prepare for her trek.
“I think this will be an amazing opportunity to learn about a different culture and see a different part of the world,” she said.
“My family is very excited for me. Our next step is to begin fundraising to help with the projects we will be involved in.”
The program runs from September 15 to October 7 and includes a program celebration where students and families can regather post the overseas experience and celebrate their achievements and learning.
