A petition calling for increased funding for Corowa Hospital and a fully funded regional hospital development in Albury Wodonga has more than 600 signatures from across Corowa, Wahgunyah and Rutherglen.
John Crothers, executive officer of the Regional Business Chamber and member of the Health Action Group, said now was the time for every concerned citizen to take a stand.
“Whether it’s your family, your neighbours, your employees, or yourself, at some point we’ll all rely on this system; we need it to work,” he said.
Sally Hughes joined the group because she is concerned about the deterioration of health provision in the community.
She said the campaign culminates in a community-wide Walk for Health on April 27 was an opportunity for everyone to come together to learn about the problem from local health leaders.
“We deserve a future-focused Albury Wodonga hospital, and for Corowa Hospital to be fit for purpose, including theatre, aged care and emergency department,” Ms Huges said.
“Together we can send a message to three levels of government that we are serious about out conviction that state and federal governments need to work together to fund a solution.”
Federation Shire’s 2024 Citizen of the Year, Leo Anic said the region was at a critical juncture.
“If we don’t act now and demand the right investment, we’ll regret the consequences for decades,” Mr Anic said.
“The only viable, long-term solution is a properly funded Greenfield site.”
Federation councilor David Harrison said the campaign was about more than just buildings.
“It’s about lives; we need Corowa Hospital upgraded now to help alleviate the pressure on Albury,” Cr Harrison said.
“Regional hospitals must be part of both immediate and long-term planning for health delivery.”
Petitions are available to sign at Waldron’s IGA, Barrel & Brew Café, DOCs Café, and Wahgunyah Post Office, and will be formally presented to the NSW, Victorian, and Federal Governments.
