“An experienced councillor, business owner and community advocate, l am standing for council election because I want to ensure council is financially secure, community focussed and not served by self- interest, or beholden to developers,” Mrs Law told the Free Press.
“Since first being elected, I am a little older, greyer, but a lot wiser and I will do what I think is best for all communities in Federation Council. As a woman on council, I have listened to the community and represented their views.”
Mrs Law is standing as an independent and is encouraging voters to vote below the line. to
“I want to be free to make strong decisions that I feel are best for the community, without the pressure, or obligation to follow other group members,” she said.
“Council elections are important, so please vote for the individual you support and not for groups which, in many cases comprise candidates who do not want to be elected but are there to fill up the group ticket.
“This is not a popularity contest. We need to ensure the election of the best people to represent them on council.”
Mrs Law was previously the owner of Gail Goodall’s Arcade Jewellers in Corowa and is well known throughout the district, having served as a director and then as the first female Chairman of the Corowa District Hospital Board.
“I was also the first female member of the Corowa Rotary Club serving as President 2005-06. I am currently the Secretary/Manager of Corowa Race Club,” she said.
“In the past, I have been the lessee of Ball Park Caravan Park and part owner of Federation Cellars, Corowa Hardware and Corowa Service Station.”
Mrs Law said her background in retail, hospitality and tourism drives her passion help grow towns across all of Federation Shire.
“We need to attract business to our towns including industry, retail shops, health services, aged services and services for youth including sporting facilities. All this needs to be done over time without causing the need for major rate increases,” she said.
Mrs Law pleased to see many projects delivered in the recent term of council.
“I am proud of the achievements made in Federation Council – The Mulwala/Corowa Bike Path, the Doctors Clinic in Oaklands, Corowa Aquatic Centre, the All-abilities Playground in Mulwala, Bangarang Park Playground, Howlong’s Lowe Square - playgrounds, netball Courts, football club extensions and gym,” she said.
“I am determined the financial status of Federation Council improves so that roads and infrastructure budgets take priority, including funds required for the completion of the Corowa Saleyards and Ball Park Caravan Park.
“Development is important, but I will not condone subsidising residential developments at ratepayer expense. It is concerning that the refusal of a poorly scoped Mulwala development was recently overturned by council, effectively ensuring more involved and longer negotiations with the developer.”
Mrs Law said it had been a pleasure working with many groups in the community over the last four years.
“At the end of this term in council, I must acknowledge the dedicated people I have worked with on the various committees, the Ageing Well Advisory Group, Arts and Culture Advisory Committee, Murray Regional Tourism, Friends of the Library, The Fed Art Prize, and our junior councillors. Their volunteer hours to Federation Council are nothing short of amazing,” she said.
“I commit to working hard for the whole of Federation Council and would appreciate your support.”
