The 38-year-old's comments at a lunch in Brisbane earlier this month led to speculation he might aim to retire after the 2026 Sydney Ashes Test.
But the left-hander is adamant there is no plan for when he quits.
"There's no set date," he told ABC radio.
"It's going to end at some point - I don't know when. I'm not going to fight it."
Khawaja hit a timely 57 on Boxing Day, his first Test half-century since January.
"I'm a realist - I'm way closer to the end than at the start and I've had a really good relationship with (coach) Andrew McDonald and (head selector) George Bailey," he said.
"I'm here as long as the team needs me and personally, I feel like I can perform and do well.
"It's the exact same for them, as long as they feel I can contribute and perform, I'm a valued part of the team, I'm playing.
"But there has to be a time when either I want to call it quits or they think it's time to move on - whatever it might be, I'm very open to it."
Pressure was building on Khawaja after his meagre scores so far in the India series, with the selectors opting to drop fellow opener Nathan McSweeney instead.
Sam Konstas came in for McSweeney and bashed the door down on Thursday, rattling the toursts with his audacious debut inning of 60 from 65 balls.
Khawaja was a rapt spectator at the other end and said of Konstas's attitude "ignorance is bliss".
He also praised the teenager for his courage, noting he played and missed at Jasprit Bumrah four times in the opening over.
Konstas also unsuccessfully tried a ramp shot twice off Bumrah before connecting.
"When you do that, you can't start second-guessing yourself - 'is this the right shot, what's going on? Khawaja said
"He actually kept going and the third one, he finally got away. Then he started playing shots everywhere.
"It was pretty special to watch, I was enjoying it from the other end."
Khawaja also revealed there was no team game plan for Konstas to take on Bumrah with ramp shots.
"I even asked Andrew McDonald after we came off - 'did you guys talk about it?' He was 'nup, didn't say a word'," he said.
"I had a feeling he was going to play it, but I left him to his own devices."
