Coming off his fifth-place tie at the Masters, two-time major champion DeChambeau followed his opening eight-under 63 with a 66 to get to 13-under 129 at Club de Golf Chapultepec on Saturday.
But 2022 British Open champion Smith matched his 66 with a round including an eagle and five birdies to keep the heat on.Â
The pair duelled while playing together on Saturday and are set to do so again.
Joaquin Nieman was two shots behind Smith in third spot after a 64 with Jon Rahm (69) a further shot back.
Former world No.2 Smith will be chasing a double victory on Sunday, with his all-Australian Ripper team leading the teams event by two shots at 24 under.
He has been well supported by Matt Jones (67) who is tied sixth at seven under, with Lucas Herbert (71, three under) tied 19th and Marc Leishman (71, two under) tied 23rd in the 55-player field.
